Marbella’s Thriving Art Scene Runs for a Second Year

Marbella has long been a destination resort for foodies, luxury property investors and the global glitterati, but now it seems that there is yet another cultural string to the bow of the beautiful Costa del Sol town as Marbella will host one of Southern Spain’s most prestigious art fairs this summer.

From Friday 29th July to Wednesday 3rd August, Art Marbella will be taking place at the Palacio de Ferias, Congresos y Exposiciones de Marbella. This is the second consecutive year that the fair, which unites artists, collectors, curators and of course local art lovers, has been situated in Marbella; a fantastic homage to the popularity of last year’s event.

The fair hopes to bring together talented painters, sculptors, photographers and many more besides with art aficionados, enthusiasts and investors so that they can enjoy the beautiful and often powerful images while still learning from, and even acquiring, works by some of the most relevant artists on the scene.

Last year’s event was a resounding success, resulting in the approximately €10 million worth of art sales and even catching the attention of The New York Times. The organiser of the event is Alejandro Zaia; a successful entrepreneur with impressive experience in communications and public relations, along with a true passion for art.

Zaia heads up the talented Art Marbella team and has founded and directed fairs in London and New York, specialising in Latin American, Spanish and Portuguese art.

Though he is a resident of Madrid, Zaia has been awarded a significant prize for the promotion of culture by the Observatorio D’Achtall. He chose Marbella for the art fair because “Marbella is the ideal location for an international fair of this level. Marbella is known as a luxury holiday destination. It may have been difficult, initially, to convince top galleries to send works and representatives, but they quickly recognised Marbella as an ideal setting to show off works to high-level buyers and art lovers from all over the world.”

“Life beats down and crushes the soul and art reminds you that you have one,” said Stella Adler, while for Oscar Wilde, art was “the most intense mode of individualism that the world has known.” Without a doubt, art holds a certain magic for all of us, even those who may not have a degree in fine arts or a profound knowledge of the subject.

For who has not found themselves completely enraptured by a painting, unexpectedly found in a corner of a gallery, speaking in symbols that the individual soul understands in an instant, effortlessly?

Art Marbella fair seeks to foster. The event, from Friday July 29 to Wednesday August 3.
